We use the term “Coach/mentoring” interchangeably and it describes all types of coaching and mentoring that may be taking place, including team dynamics feedback and individual one-on-one development coaching. The term “Client” is used to describe the person who is directly working with the Coach on the shared development goals; the term is interchangeable with any other term that the parties to the coaching/mentoring relationship might be more comfortable with, such as “partner”, “coachee” or “mentee”. The term “Sponsor” refers to the person within the organisation who is responsible for commissioning the overall coaching programme.It should be noted that although the “Sponsor” may be the person who signs off on the coaching budget, in all respects it is the “Client” to whom we owe the greatest responsibility and duty of care.
When it comes to one-on-one coaching it is critical that the Sponsor, Client and Coach share a common vision for what is seen as a successful outcome and how to achieve it.To be clear, the Client sets the agenda and the success of the coaching relationship depends on the Client’s willingness to take risks, accept constructive feedback and try new approaches. The coaching relationship is designed to be candid, always sincere and at times, direct and challenging.At all times the Client can rely on the Coach to be committed to their personal success as a leader and as a team member.The Coach will be honest and straightforward, listening with integrity to challenges and concerns and at all times providing a sounding board for new ideas whilst providing constructive feedback that is action-oriented.
The focus of coaching is designed to deliver: -a thorough understanding of motivations, beliefs & personal vision; -a greater level of self-awareness; -an enhanced level of empathy, understanding the actions and beliefs of others; -an increased alignment between personal and performance outcomes; -an enhanced personal leadership style that will be effective in equipping the Client with new influencing strategies and allow the individual to empower themselves and their colleagues; -development opportunities and implementation guidance to meet the Client’s objectives.
Coaching is integral to the Shinergise philosophy- its purpose is to Create New Energy and in so doing, Deliver New Results. The tools used will depend on a variety of factors and initially at least will depend heavily on the Client’s existing personal development history and most critically, their degree of self-awareness and past experience with various development tools.We will always work with Client’s existing psychometric profiles where these exist and talk through with the Client how accurate they feel these tools (which can often be off-target in the Client’s eyes) describe their particular character and behaviours. Where possible, we would work with existing 360 degree feedback tools and only move to implement new 360 degree feedback reviews once a trusting relationship is established between the Client and the Coach.Where there is insufficient pre-existing developmental feedback material, we utilise a variety of web-based tools and these are charged at cost.In addition to traditional profiling tools such as Myers-Briggs, Firo-B, Strengthfinders 2.0 and Belben amongst others, we have also recently started to use the UK government’s DTI “Inspirational Leadership: Insight to Action” tool which brings a new dimension to the coaching environment. The Introductory Briefing Session is a vital three-way discussion involving the Sponsor, the Client and the Coach.At the end of this session all parties agree to a clear personal development brief that the Client and Coach will then co-develop and co-own; this session defines the proposed ways of working, the principles of coaching confidentiality and the extent of post-coaching feedback that the Coach will provide both the Client and the Sponsor at the end of the coaching programme.
